Van Gogh painted these flowers in order to impress his friend Paul Gauguin who is going to be staying in the guest room of his home. Yellow pigments were not very wide spread during this time so the fact that Van Gogh used the entire spectrum of yellow was very impressive and innovated. Yellow symbolizes gratitude, happiness, and optimism. Which is the exact feeling Van Gogh wanted to give in this painting.
